What’s in this week’s update: News on an upcoming SAG recipient, more TCM documentaries coming to DVD, pricing changes for ClassicFlix members, and what’s coming to DVD and Blu-ray.
In the interest of full disclosure, I work for the fine folks at ClassicFlix as their associate editor. However, I feel this is news worthy if only for those who don’t know about the site to begin with. (I get no commission or bonus perks, short of a pat on the back, if anyone signs up from this). With that, ClassicFlix has restructured their pricing over the last month. Now, for 7.99 a month you can rent out 2 DVDs at a time in a sweet cardboard mailer that, we’re hoping, won’t be crushed by the mail delivery process. If you aren’t sure what ClassicFlix does, they’re “Netflix for classic films” where you can rent and purchase classic films from every outlet: Warner Archive, Olive Films, you name it, they’ve got it. With a revamped pricing structure, feel free to give the site a peruse and see if it’s for you.
The adorable Debbie Reynolds will be the recipient of a Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. The actor, singer, dancer, ultimate woman scorned is receiving an award only given to an actor fostering “the finest ideals of the acting profession,” and Reynolds hits that mark. The ceremony will be simulcast on TNT and TBS, January 25th, 2015 at 8pm Eastern. I can only imagine the people attending to honor her, and especially what Debbie herself will say!
Coming soon from TCM: The acclaimed documentary about Richard D. Zanuck, Don’t Say No Until I Finish Talking. TCM will exclusively sell the documentary through their store starting September 8th. You can pre-order it now at the Shop TCM site.
I reported a month or so ago about the Warner Brothers Studio Tour’s Batman exhibit. It’s been announced that the exhibit, originally set to close in September, is being extended to the end of the year due to popular demand. Newly added to the presentation is the cape and cowl worn by Ben Affleck in the new upcoming Batman film. And, if you’re in the L.A. area be on the lookout for the Bat signal, projected on the side of Studio 16 at the Warner Brothers Studios. Tours continue to run seven days a week between 8:15am and 4pm. You can purchase tickets at the WB Studio Tour website.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
Criterion Collection: Claudette Colbert must have some magic because around the time her tribute aired as part of TCM’s Summer Under the Stars, the Criterion Collection announced It Happened One Night on a newly restored 2-disc DVD and single-disc Blu-ray, both releasing on November 18th. Both will receive a 4K transfer, a feature-length documentary on Frank Capra, Capra’s first film, a 1982 AFI tribute to Capra, interviews, trailer, and essay.
Classic Media: Christmas keeps coming early with the announcement that the 1964 musical television movie, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is being released on 50th Anniversary DVD and Blu-ray, November 4th.
I'm a college student getting my Master's in English, but dreams of getting an additional degree in Film. I'm a movie reviewer for several sites, but I also write classic film reviews for several other sites. I stretch myself pretty thin these days. You can usually find me at a bookstore, or a movie theater. I dream of the day when the two are combined. I base a lot of my friendships on favorite movies.
