I remember discovering the joy of Esther Williams movies while watching That’s Entertainment!. It was still very early in my classic film life, but as a swimmer I had to know more about this fascinating woman! I remember being in love with the water ballets and the fact that a girl who had shoulders that looked like mine could make a splash (pardon the pun!) as a Hollywood actress. Love her or… struggle with her…. Esther Williams helmed some of the most interesting and unique musicals coming out of the Golden Age of Hollywood. This movies are opulent, fun, escapist romps… plus, who here doesn’t like to see her leading men struggle to keep up with her in the water?
It’s sure to be a fun day of viewing! What movies are you looking forward to watching? Let us know in the comments.
A Career in Review:
If You Can Only Watch One:
Neptune’s Daughter hits TCM early today (10:00am EST). The musical comedy is by far and away my favorite from Williams, who co-stars opposite Red Skelton, Betty Garrett and Ricardo Montalbán in a story of fashion design, polo and love (is there any other kind?). The movie features one of my favorite music numbers of all-time, a gender-swapped version of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” which does the heart good. Plus, do I need to remind you that Ricardo Montalban is a delight? Enough said. Check this one out if you haven’t seen it yet!
