Summer Under the Stars- Tyrone Power (August 22nd)

Some Reflection:

I first remember learning of the existence of Tyrone Power as part of my earliest classic film viewings. It was my love of the 1954 musical There’s No Business like Show Business which brought me to Power’s 1938 musical Alexander’s Ragtime Band… and middle school me fell in love. I mean, look at that face. How can you not?

Beyond that though, I’m not the strongest with Power’s career. His films have largely alluded me! So, I’m looking forward to diving into some of the many essentials which I haven’t watched yet, most notably: Blood and Sand, Nightmare Alley and The Mark of Zorro.

Let’s hear your reccomendations, kids!

A Career in Review:

The Mark of Zorro (1940)

Blood and Sand (1941)

Ticklish Business #64: The Black Swan (1942)

The Razor’s Edge (1946)

Green Dolphin Street (1947)

Witness for the Prosecution (1957)

Ticklish Business Episode #77: Top 3 Thirsty Noirs

If You Wan Only Watch One:

I don’t think I’m going to be able to answer this one simply. Okay. Fine! I’m going to cheat. I have to give two answers to this question.

I am going public with an embarrassingly revelation for a noir fan… I’ve never seen Nightmare Alley. That’s right! I’m looking at the intriguing noir as a first time watch today. The movie airs in the late night spot (12:15am EST).

As for a must watch essential, I can’t recommend Witness for the Prosecution enough. I first watched the movie on the big screen at the TCMFF. Going into the theater, I had so many preconceived notions that it was a boring legal drama… and I couldn’t have been more wrong! The Billy Wilder directed feature is a brilliant work of cinema featuring amazing character work from the likes of Power, Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester. Make time for this one if you haven’t seen it.

Witness for the Prosecution airs today at 12:45pm EST.
